In 1810, Emperor Alexander I approved Bobruisk as the site of the construction of one of the strongholds in the line of defense of the western borders of the Russian Empire.

The author of the master plan and the head of the construction of the grandiose fortress was Count Karl Opperman, a well-known fortification engineer, combat officer. Work began on June 4, 1810.

Thousands of soldiers and peasants participated in the construction, using the latest achievements of European military art. The citadel was included in the first class of the defensive structures of the empire, its territory was almost 120 hectares.

The fortifications housed more than 300 guns of various calibers, ammunition stocks were calculated for a year, and supplies for six months.

In 1812, the Bobruisk Citadel took the main blow of Napoleon’s army, and after the departure of the Russian army of General Bagration, the garrison restrained the siege of the French for 4 months.

At the second stage of construction (1812-1855), the Bobruisk fortress turned into a unique complex, famous not only for its fortifications but also for its beautiful architecture in the style of classicism.
