The city of Brest is the administrative center of the Brest region in the south-west of Belarus.

As of January 1, 2019, the population of the city amounted to 350,616 people. The territory of the city is equivalent - 146.12 km².

The city is located in the southwestern part of the region, at the confluence of the Mukhavets River in the Western Bug, near the state border with Poland.

Brest is a large railway junction, a river port on Mukhavets, an important road junction.

The city of Brest was first mentioned as Berestye in the Tale of Bygone Years under 1019, although under 980 Berestovo was also mentioned in it.

According to the year of its first mention, Brest is the fifth city in the territory of present Belarus, earlier only Polotsk (862), Vitebsk (974), Turov (980) and Volkovysk (1005) were mentioned.

Over its history, the city of Brest has been destroyed many times and changed its nationality, and in 1991 it has been part of Belarus to this day.
